What is Market Wide Half Hourly Programme (MHHS)?

The MHHS programme is a key enabler to transition the UK towards Net Zero. Leveraging the technology in smart metering systems, the new data driven approach to energy consumption across the country will create fairer energy tracking and billing.

The MHHS industry wide programme is being led by Ofgem and will have an implementation approach aiming to conclude December 2027.

The programme will create a landscape where electricity trading in the UK will be based on accurate half-hourly consumer consumption data. This ambitious goal will be achieved through smart metering; these smart meters will unlock the benefits of the MHHS programme.

Why Is the Industry Changing?

The shift to MHHS supports:

  • A flexible, low-carbon energy system.
  • Allows better integration of renewable products.
  • Accurate billing based on when you use energy, not just how much.
  • Enables energy suppliers to offer a range of new products to customers providing greater flexibility and avoiding high-demand periods.

As the UK transitions towards Net Zero, leveraging technology in smart meters will build a smarter, greener, and more sustainable grid this will reflect in changes to the way consumers are billed.
