The current model for calculating electricity consumption doesn’t match the evolving energy landscape with more renewable sources and growing demand. The change is also crucial for transitioning to a zero-carbon electricity grid by 2035, the new grid allows for better management of fluctuating renewable energy supplies.
As a result, the current customer use classes increasingly use various assumptions that do not necessarily reflect how energy is used today. Smart meters are needed to unlock the benefits of MHHS as they record the amount of energy used on a half-hourly basis
The system will allow suppliers and the grid to settle electricity consumption based on actual consumption data provided by smart and other remotely read meters. It will also enable suppliers to offer products that could encourage customers to avoid high-demand periods.
