SMART Metering Policy

From 5th December the rules for SMART meters have changed. Government legislation requires energy suppliers to install AMR (Automated Meter Read) or SMART meters in every UK business before the end of 2020.

What does this mean for you?

If you are a Micro Business Customer, that means if your business has either less than 10 employees, or makes less than €2 million Euros, or you consume less than a 100,000 kWh of electricity and 293,000kWh of gas then you will qualify for a new SMART meter. (The consumption threshold applies to the fuel being supplied).

If you are not a Micro Business Customer as stated above then you can choose an AMR or SMART meter.

What’s the difference between an AMR and SMART Meter?

AMR (Automated Meter Reader) is based on SMS technology just like your mobile phone. It is one way communication receiving read data from the meter to us.

SMART is based on a HAN network just like your Wi-Fi at home. It is two way communication where we can receive and send numerous messages to the meter.

Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and SMART meters accurately measure your energy use and send readings directly to us. This ensures accurate billing and helps you take control of your energy management:

  • It’s easier to forecast usage and budget ahead – wave goodbye to estimated bills
  • Accurate reads – your new meter will be read remotely each month
  • Less administration – no need to validate invoices, so you can get on with running your business
  • The AMR meter exchange work is completed at no additional cost
